The Gravity team exhibited and presented at the Supply Chain Innovation Summit 2016 Asia Pacific (SCIS) last year and I’d like to share with you some of what we learned from our conversations with senior supply chain executives and thought leaders from the FMCG, Hi-tech, Retail, Logistics, E-commerce and Manufacturing industries. If you ask me to provide a short, high-level summary, I’d say the word on virtually everyone’s lips is “fragmentation.”
That probably doesn’t surprise you. As global supply chains continue to expand and become more complex, the challenge of keeping all of your supply chain parts and partners working together is one so many companies face. If that includes you, take comfort in the fact that you’re definitely not alone!
One such story included a chemical executive voicing his frustrations over the fact the company manages shipments by region, not globally. As a result, each region operates in its own silos. Each region with their own system, own logistics providers, with different contracts, all of which don’t “talk” to each other.
Another executive, this one with a large beauty company, also struggles with trying to manage many fragmented systems. Some of the company’s 3PLs provide IT systems and support, but others don’t. And its own in-house system only provides limited information. So the company is looking to implement one system that can gather and analyze data from so many different sources. But, they don’t want to “rip-and-replace” their existing systems.
A representative with a large global 3PL described how it learned the hard way that building your own in-house solution comes with it’s own challenges. The company built a new track and trace system to replace their old one. Trouble is, that old system stored 3 years of historical customer data - and they don’t have the ability to migrate that data from old to new.

Those three executives hold different roles and responsibilities, and work in different industries. But like so many SCIS attendees during this two day summit, they have the same priority: eliminate fragmentation.
